Everything you need to know about the DET and how to prep for it.
The Duolingo English Test is an online English proficiency exam used for university admissions and visa applications. It scores from 10–160 in five-point bands, takes about an hour, and is accepted by 5,000+ institutions worldwide. It costs less than IELTS or TOEFL and you can take it from home.
A score of 105–115 is comparable to IELTS 6.5–7. Most undergraduate programs accept 105–120. Selective universities (Ivy League, Oxbridge, top Canadian schools) typically ask for 120–125. Graduate programs vary widely — check each program directly.
Read & Complete shows a 1–2 paragraph passage with partial words. You type the missing letters of each blanked word in 3 minutes. The keys to improving: build vocabulary across academic, scientific and everyday topics; practice spelling at speed; recognise common word stems; and finish reading each sentence before guessing letters — context disambiguates ambiguous letters.
Fill in the Blanks is the shorter cousin of Read & Complete — one sentence with a few partial words, 20 seconds (33 for easy). The format is the same; the time pressure is the difference. Speed practice with short sentences trains the same muscle as Read & Complete.
Duolingo’s official prep is one official sample test plus marketing pages. Real practice volume requires third-party tools. This site provides 800 hand-crafted Read & Complete passages and 1,300 Fill in the Blanks questions that follow the exact official format: word lengths, blank patterns, time limits, scoring rubric.
Most users hit a 5–15 point score improvement after 4–6 weeks of daily practice (10–15 R&C passages + 20 FIB questions per day). The largest gains come in the first 2 weeks as you internalise the format and stop losing points to timing or spelling. Diminishing returns after about 8 weeks.
